Guerin Prep is co-ed today, yet we remain dedicated to educating our young women to be strong, amazing women and leaders of tomorrow.
Guerin Prep’s newest program—“Educating Women to Leadership & Life” is being led by current registrar and long-time faculty member at Guerin, Mary Stephany, and an alumnae committee.
Key to the program's success will be active participation by alumnae who will mentor girls who seek such a relationship.
Ms. Stephany defined the role of the adult mentor as someone who provides knowledge, shares the wisdom of her experiences, facilitates the development of skills and competencies within the student being mentored and fosters curiosity and interest in a specific career or area.
What about the boys?
Today, particularly in the world of work, it appears that many young women need more encouragement in setting higher goals for their professional and personal aspirations. Often, women are not compensated nor rewarded with promotions equal to their male counterparts, commonly referred to as “The Glass Ceiling Syndrome.”
Guerin has convened a group of MTG graduates to create a program to begin to address this perceived need. The program began to take shape in December 2008.
The design is intended to include symposiums, career speakers and the Mentoring Program described here. To date, we have initiated the Mentor Program and sponsored one symposium. Much development work remains.
It is Guerin's intention to create a parallel program for male students after this inaugural program is underway. At that time, we will be asking Holy Cross graduates to step up as well to mentor our young men.
