A Thousand Cranes

Guerin Theatre Department presents A Thousand Cranes by Kathryn Schultz Miller on Friday, November 17; 7 PM in the Guerin Auditorium. Tickets are $2 and may be purchased at the door.

Based on the best selling novel by Eleanor Coerr, A Thousand Cranes presents the true and poignant story of Sadako Saski, who was two years old when the atomic bomb dropped on the small city of Hiroshima, where she lived. When Sadako, at age 12, is diagnosed with "radiation sickness, or leukemia (an effect of the bombing that happened 10 years before) Sadako's friend Kenji reminds her of an old story about a crane. If a sick person folds a thousand origami cranes, the gods will grant her wish and make her healthy again. Sadako happily begins folding hundreds of beautiful, colorful paper cranes. Before she is able to fold a thousand cranes Sadako dies on October 25, 1955. Her friends and classmates fold the last 356 cranes to make a thousand.
