IIn addition to the scholarships detailed below, Guerin Prep offers need-based financial aid and work/study programs.Learn more about need-based financial aid.


PRESIDENT SCHOLARSHIP
$2,000 scholarships are automatically awarded to the top ten scorers on the January Placement Test.  These students will also be considered for the Nolan Scholars Program.  The president’s scholarship is renewable for the sophomore year if the student maintains a 3.6 GPA. No scholarship application required.

PRINCIPAL SCHOLARSHIP
$1,500 scholarships are automatically awarded to the next 15 top scorers on the January Placement Test.   These students will also be considered for the Nolan Scholar Program.  The principal’s scholarship is renewable for the sophomore year if the students maintains a 3.6 GPA. No scholarship application required.

NOLAN SCHOLARS PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to those students who are accepted as Nolan Scholars.  Students are invited to apply to the Nolan Scholars program once they are accepted into Guerin Prep, based on entrance test scores, academic record and recommendations.  A special application must be completed and an interview may be scheduled.  The scholarship is renewable for the sophomore year if the student fulfills all the responsibilities of being in the honors program, including a 3.6 GPA.

BETTY WALSCHEID SCHOLARSHIP*
This fund, established in the name of Betty Walscheid, alumna and faculty member of Mother Theodore Guerin High School, provides for up to two renewable tuition scholarships of $1,500 each. Application for the award is open to sophomores enrolled in Chemistry-Honors who have completed Biology in their freshman year. The award is applied against tuition in the student’s junior and senior years provided the student meets the criteria of the award.  A separate application must be completed and submitted by Feb. 3 and may be downloaded from this web site.

FLETCHER SCHOLARSHIP*
This award, established in honor of Charles and Margaret Fletcher, parents of four Holy Cross graduates, for their sacrifice and dedication to high-quality education, provides a junior boy with a $1,500 scholarship to be applied to his senior year at Guerin Prep. This scholarship is intended to inspire the development of communication skills in Guerin graduates. Leaders are often defined by their ability to successfully communicate their ideas. Regardless of the path you choose after leaving Guerin Prep, you will find it very important for you to be able to communicate in an effective manner.

SISTER GERTRUDE SMITH SCHOLARSHIP*

This fund, established in the name of Sister Gertrude Smith, SP, enables Guerin Prep to offer a minimum of 20 awards of $1,000 each to students who demonstrate the following: successful completion of one or more years of schooling at Guerin Prep with an average of 2.5 or better, active participation in extracurricular activities, evidence of good citizenship in and out of school and financial need.  Applications are available in January and may be downloaded from this Web site.

HAROLD AND GENEVIEVE KENNING SCHOLARSHIP*
This fund, established in memory of Harold and Genevieve Kenning, provides for one $1,000 scholarship for a graduate of St. Celestine Grade School who demonstrates overall academic achievement of a B average or better; financial need may also be a factor.  The student must take the entrance exam at Guerin Prep High School.  At this time, the scholarship is for freshman year only.  The application is available in January and may be downloaded from this Web site.

IRISH FELLOWSHIP EDUCATIONAL GRANT*
Applicants should have at least two of their eight great-grandparents from the Republic of Ireland. Applicants, preferably freshmen or sophomores, will be chosen solely by need.

CARMEN D. AND ANGIE FORTE ITALIAN HERITAGE SCHOLARSHIP*
This scholarship has been established in honor of the Fortes, long-time supporters of Guerin Prep and its foundation schools. It provides two $1,000 scholarships-one for a female student and one for a male student of Italian ancestry. The award is open to incoming freshmen as well as sophomores and juniors and is based on financial need and a typewritten essy. Applications are available in January and may be downloaded from this Web site.

CZESLAW MICHALCZUK POLISH HERITAGE SCHOLARSHIP*
This scholarship has been established in honor of the Czeslaw Michalczuk, the father of a Mother Theodore Guerin High School alumna, to help Polish families who make the financial sacrifice to provide their daughters with a Guerin Prep Education. It provides one $750 scholarship to a freshman or sophomore girl in good academic standing and with a good disciplinary record who is of Polish ancestry (the student, one parent or one grandparent was born in Poland) and who has financial need. Applications are available in January and may be downloaded from this Web site. A typewritten essay is required.

ALFRED J. COULOMBE, JR. SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was created by Christine '88, Charisse '92 and Colette '97 Couloumbe to honor their father, who was of French-Canadian descent. Alfred and his wife Rita wwere active in the MTGHS Parents Club and athletic events. It grants a $500 annual award to a French student honoring the spirit of Alfred Coulombe. Applications are available in January and may be downloaded from this web site.

MARK F. READER SCHOLARSHIP
The Mark F. Reader Scholarship was established by Dena Crissie to honor her Uncle Mark’s legacy at Holy Cross High School.  Mark, who lost his battle with cancer at the age of 54, was an outstanding athlete.  He was inducted into the Holy Cross Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. The scholarship is a $500 award and is earmarked for a Sullivan Program Student. Applications are available in January and may be downloaded from this web site.

GEORGE MCMAHON SCHOLARSHIP

The George McMahon Scholarship has been established in memory of George McMahon, a dedicated public servant and devoted father of both Mother Theodore Guerin and Holy Cross High School alumni.  This scholarship honors his life-long commitment as a Chicago police officer, ending his career as the chief of detective, and seeks to assist children of police or other public safety officials who are in financial need. Open to incoming freshmen, sophomores and juniors in good academic standing, applicants must also submit an essay on what receiving the scholarship would mean to them. Applications are available in January and may be downloaded from this web site.


OUTSIDE SOURCES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

ARCHBISHOP’S SCHOLARSHIPS These scholarships are sponsored by the Cardinal’s Office and based solely upon financial need. Only first and second year students are eligible. No separate application needed for the scholarship; only the financial aid application need be submitted.

HIGHSIGHT SCHOLARSHIP HighSight awards partial four-year scholarships for students to attend private high schools. To qualify you must currently be in eighth grade and live in Chicago. HighSight also provides academic and social support to enable its students to succeed at the high school of their choice. HighSight scholars are expected to demonstrate a commitment to their education and show a motivation to succeed. Qualifying families must exhibit financial need. The HighSight application is available at the Guerin Prep High School business office or at www.highsight.org.

DANIEL MURPHY SCHOLARSHIP The Daniel Murphy Scholarship Foundation encourages eighth graders to apply for four-year, private college preparatory high school scholarships.  In early September applications are mailed to more than 800 public and private schools. All eighth graders interested in the scholarship should contact their principals, counselors and teachers to request an application. The Daniel Murphy Scholarship Foundation can be reached at www.dmsf.org.

Important Directions: please note, when applying for financial aid, you must

1) Complete and return "Financial Aid Information Sheet," to the Guerin Prep High School business office by Feb. 3.

2) Mail the FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment Form and all requested documentation (such as 1040s and W-2s -- please refer to application for details) and your check for the processing fee postmarked by Feb. 3 directly to THEIR offices at the address provided ON THE APPLICATION. Spanish applications are available in the Business Office.

3) Complete separate applications for all scholarships and return them to the Guerin Prep High School business office by Feb. 3. Any questions call 708-437-4710.
