THE SYMBOLISM
OF THE GUERIN PREP RING
In keeing with the tradition of all Sister of Providence sponsored schools, the Guerin Prep ring was designed exclusively for our school—there is no other like it anywhere. The ring uses the major elements of the offIicial school seal, which carries the coat of arms of the Sisters of Providence.
If you look closely at the face of the ring, you will see that the coat of arms contains a shield divided vertically in halves. On the left side is a poplar tree with two Latin crosses on either side. The tree is a reminder of the French origin of the Sisters of Providence and of their motherhouse at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. The crosses are both symbols of the church and of our faith in Jesus Christ. The M above the tree is symbolic of Mary, a model of steadfast love for all of us.
There are three eaglets on the right side of the shield symbolizing the Holy Trinity.
The crown or crest above the shield is the coronet of the family of the French Count du Roscoat, whose daughter was the first superior general of the Sisters of Providence in France.
Below and around the shield you will find the Latin words, Virtus cum Scientia, which means Virtue and Knowledge united. This motto was chosen by Blessed Mother Theodore as the aim of all schools operated by the Sisters of Providence. Here at Guerin Prep the development of Christian values or virtues is as important as the imparting of knowledge.
On either side of the ring is the student’s year of graduation set off in block numerals. The ring can be personalized by having the student’s name engraved inside the band.
Finally, the ring itself is given in recognition that the student who wears it has achieved a certain academic status at Guerin Prep and is a member in good standing in this learning community. We are proud of the students who wear this ring, and students who wear this ring should wear it with pride for their school and for their own accomplishments.
