Shaved Heads Help Nolan Scholars
Raise Money for Relay for Life

Hair Today, Gone Today!
Guerin Prep's principal Tony Tinerella (back row, center) had lots of "bald" company thanks to the generosity of the Guerin Prep community. Guerin Prep raised more than $2,200 for its Relay of Life team in support of the fight against cancer, exceeding the $1,800 amount Mr. Tinerella said had to be raised for him to shave his hair. He was joined by by three other faculty members: Mr. Andy Damato, Mr. Victor Giordano and Mr. Tom Jaworski; and four students:Vincent Kaehler, Chris Ojeda, Andy Ristau and Grace Pflaumer. Mr. Earl Danan got "talked into it" once the school gathered in assembly. Click here to see the Shave OFF.
Guerin Prep's Nolan Scholars will form GP's Relay of Life Team and sponsored many fund-raising activities in support of fighting cancer. Click here to read more about the Relay for Life.
Nolan Scholars Learn the Art of the
Fairchild Challenge Tee-Shirt Competition
For the second year in a row, the first-year Nolan Scholars are participating in the Fairchild Challenge. The Fairchild Challenge is a free, multidisciplinary contest that challenges Chicago-area high schools to take action on behalf of the environment. Sponsored by the Chicago Botanic Gardens, students participate in the Challenge by submitting entries in up to 11 categories that include land use planning, photojournalism, tee shirt design, music composition, environmental action and more.
At left, Lisa Cinelli, instructs the Nolan Scholars in the fine art of relief printing in preparation for the Fairchild Challenge Tee-Shirt Design Competition. The challenge is very specific in terms of the requirements including the creation of a relief print. The design was to incorporate logos from the Fairchild Challenge and the Chicago Botanic Garden. The focus was on pollinators native to the Midwest. Below is one of the two designs selected from those created to represent Guerin Prep in the challenge.

Prepare Photo Essays
for 2010 Fairchild Challenge
In conjunction with the semester's focus on Chicago and its neighboring communities, the first-year Nolan Scholars participated in a field trip to downtown Chicago, including an architectural tour of Chicago by boat, a tour of the Chicago History Museum, and excursions to Lincoln Park Zoo, the Lincoln Park Conservatory, and the lakefront. Prior to thetrip, Mrs. Zelm, Guerin Prep photography teacher, conducted a mini-photography class with the Nolan Scholars to prepare them for the photo essay challenge of the Fairchild Challenge. Each scholar, then, submitted photos and captions according to the guidelines issued by the Fairchild Challenge. Below are two of the collages that were selected for the competition.
