When senior Frank Marinopoulos and his family moved to Chicago from Park Ridge last year, he had to decide if he would attend Taft or Guerin.

After some soul searching, he decided on Guerin because it was a smaller school where he could feel comfortable and get more one-on-one help in school.

While months later, he's sure he made the right decision, the same can be said about the wrestling team at Guerin.

Marinopoulos (33-12) registered the most wins in a single season in Guerin/Holy Cross history, beating Alex Sullivan's 32 wins in 2012.

High school students are busy. From athletics to student council to band practice, any parent will tell you their child's schedule is packed. With so many activities, it's easy to forget about the world outside of the high school bubble.

For this reason, the majority of Catholic high schools have adopted service-learning components in their curriculum. Here are a few ways that service-focused schools benefit both the student and the surrounding community.

5 Ways Catholic High Schools Prepare Students for College

Attending a Catholic high school gives students an edge that helps them stand out during the college application process and beyond. Here are five ways that private high schools provide top-notch college preparation to all their students.

Why some high schools strive for intellectual and spiritual formation
  » 1/30/2014
tweet this  share this on facebook

The concept of a Catholic education has been around for several decades, however a full understanding of all that one offers, has not.

For many, a religious education simply means a few catechism classes and nuns in the halls.

Lesser known, is that Catholic schools offer much more than a couple of Hail Marys and Our Fathers in morning. An education rooted in the Catholic tradition follows an intensive learning model that is continually evolving to best meet both the intellectual and spiritual needs of each student.

Cathoilc schools push students to achieve individual bests

When selecting a high school, many parents struggle with weighing how much or how little their child will be academically challenged to reach their highest potential. Catholic schools have long held a reputation for producing high achieving adults, making them a worthwhile consideration.

Why Catholic Schools offer great return on investment
  » 1/30/2014
tweet this  share this on facebook

Financing a private education can leave many folks wondering what it would feel like to reallocate those hefty payments towards a dream car or a vacation home. The truth is that while sending children through college prep schools is a big investment, it also guarantees a return better than any luxury purchase could ever promise.

Catholic schools in particular focus on the development of each student’s character. Such emphasis translates across several aspects of life, all of which will benefit a teenager through their college years and beyond.

Faith life extends beyond morning prayers in Chicago Catholic schools

Schools with faith-based curriculums offer advantages for Catholic and non-Catholic students, alike. While the majority of students who attend Catholic schools have been raised in the faith, according the the Archdiocese of Chicago, 15 percent of Chicago students are not.

Families choose Catholic schools for a variety of reasons, not least of them being the opportunity for children to experience an enriched faith life. With deep exposure to the Catholic message, students are able to better understand the tradition and practices of the faith.

High school band builds teams and musicians

Band kids may have a reputation for being less game-savvy than their passing and tackling classmates, but that doesn’t mean they know any less about teamwork, competition and the camaraderie that comes from hard work.

In addition to the intellectual benefits of playing instruments, high school band programs provide many similar opportunities as high school sports teams — but with more jams and fewer grass stains.

Committing to a music program, whether it be band, orchestra, or a select ensemble, requires triple the level of dedication as a one-season sports team. Members sign on for a full school year of rehearsals, daily practice and competitions. It won’t be for naught, though. According to an analysis of U.S. Department of Education data on more than 25,000 secondary school students, all that time tuning and marching consistently leads to higher levels of math proficiency by senior year.

Extensive research of students in fine arts programs shows a strong correlation between music and academic achievement.

“Learning and performing music actually exercise the brain – not merely by developing specific music skills, but also by strengthening the synapses between brain cells…What is important is not how well a student plays but rather the simultaneous engagement of senses, muscles, and intellect,” writes Dr. Norman Weinberger, in his paper “Music in Our Minds,” a professor at UC-Irvine who has spent years studying music and the brain.
